Puskás János, Ph.D
Dean of faculty

Samuel Tessedik, born 268 years ago, founded the Practical Agricultural School of Diligence in Szarvas in 1780, which is considered to be the first school of agricultural education in Hungary. This school was closed in 1806.

The education of agricultural professionals has been re-started in Szarvas in 1927 on the basis of Tessedik’s ideas and it has been continued since that time, however it was adapted to the different demands of the different ages.

Main steps in the history of school (before the beginning of college education):
- Secondary Agricultural School (1927-1944)
- Agricultural Secondary and Polytechnic School (1945-1965)
- School of Agricultural Technicians (1960-1970)

After closing the School of Agricultural Technicians the Szarvas Agricultural College Faculty of Debrecen Agricultural University was founded in 1970. The new faculty started the education of plant cultivation, irrigation and amelioration. Besides the regular basic training post-graduate training was started as well.
The number of students was relatively constant till the beginning of the 1990s. By the introducing of course of agricultural engineers specialized in environment management in 1992, new life has been started at the Faculty. The number of students has increased significantly. Since 2000 our Faculty has been operated as the Faculty of Agricultural Water and Environmental Management of Tessedik Samuel College.

As a part of the Bologna Process our Faculty has changed to the new type of education (after a year of transition) thus it has started only BSc trainings since 2006.
